From DM to Dream Set: Microcement Dining Table and Japandi Chairs for a Home in Cologne

Sometimes a project simply starts with a message in our DM. That's how we recently received a message from a customer in Cologne, Germany. She had seen our furniture and immediately fell in love with the natural look of our microcement dining tables and Volos Japandi dining chairs.

Her wish was clear: a custom-made 3-meter table, combined with eight Volos dining chairs in a warm, soft color scheme. From the first contact, we knew this would be a collaboration we could be proud of.

From DM to design

We directed her to our online configurator, where she could customize her table to her liking, from length and color to leg finish. A few days later, we received her design, and it immediately stood out. The proportions, balance, and simplicity were exactly what makes the Japandi style so beautiful: peace and harmony in a single glance.

We sent the design to our atelier, where our technicians converted it into a precise 3D drawing. In consultation with the atelier, we determined the dimensions of the legs. For a 3.10-meter table, stable legs are essential, not only for sturdiness but also for visual balance. We chose proportions that keep the table optically light and structurally strong. The result was a design where the legs are perfectly centered, with enough space in between to comfortably slide the chairs underneath.

The choice of color and fabric

For the color, the customer chose Pale Stone, a soft, neutral shade with warm undertones that beautifully interacts with natural light. She combined it with the linen fabric Roma27 from our Roma series for the chairs. The light linen, together with the walnut-colored frame of the Volos chairs, gave the ensemble a calm and natural look. Minimalist yet warm, exactly as Japandi is intended, and the Japandi dining chairs fit perfectly here.

What we found particularly special is how the color of the microcement table and the fabric enhance each other. During the day, sunlight gently reflects off the surface, making the table appear almost powdery. In the evening, with warmer light, the color gains a sandy depth. This subtle interplay of light and texture makes each microcement table unique, as if it lives with the space.

From high-quality MDF to finished furniture piece

Once all details were coordinated, we started working in the atelier. The table was cut from high-quality MDF panels with a CNC machine, precise to the millimeter. Then the real work began: the microcement finish, applied entirely by hand.

The table was treated in seven steps:

  1. Primer layer as a base for optimal adhesion and an even surface.
  2. Three layers of microcement carefully applied by hand. After the last layer, the surface is professionally sanded with a polishing machine, making it smooth to the touch while the natural texture remains subtly visible. This minimal texture gives the table character; each piece is different, and no two surfaces are identical.
  3. Three layers of matte PU coating that protect against scratches, wear, stains, and UV radiation. The matte finish gives the surface a soft, natural look without gloss but with a refined depth.

The result is a table that not only looks beautiful but is also resistant to daily life. Durable, stylish, and timeless.

The drive to Cologne

A few weeks later, the time had come. We set off for Cologne for delivery and assembly. The customer's house was by the water, a beautiful home with plenty of light and character.

As we brought the table in, it immediately became apparent how perfectly the color Pale Stone fit into the space. We assembled the table and placed the eight Volos chairs around it. While we were working, the customers watched with smiles. They saw their design come to life, exactly as they had envisioned it.

The sun streamed through the large windows, caressing the microcement top, making the warm tones even softer. The linen chairs in Roma27 caught the same light, and the combination felt calm, natural, and homey.

“It turned out even more beautiful than we thought.”

A few days later, we received another message from them:

“We would like to order another microcement table, but for outdoors.”

These are the moments we live for: satisfied customers, a unique result, and furniture that truly adds something to their living space.
